Enjoying Peruvian Pasos to their fullest extent.

Friday June 18-Sunday June 20, 2010. This will be one of those "breath taken away" moments - except it happened 40 hours over and over. A group from Medina Lake, Bergheim, Hondo spent almost two days at Hill Country State Natural Area outside of Bandera TX. We camped at the Lodge, and we had 11 Peruvian Pasos between us. The Texas weather totally cooperated - nice breeze, no bugs .... We took some very good trailrides while there - one long one on Saturday morning that was awesome. Our horses…See More

1984 PPHRNA History of the Peruvian Horse in North America

I have recently picked up one of these flyers. I would be very interested if anyone knows who the horses are that are included. there appears to be horses from US and horses from Peru. We have tried to match them to pictures from a couple of calendars and looked at the first Decade book and just cannot be sure if they match. Thanks so very much. Pam Elliott, Lakehills TX See More

Hi Pam,

The similarities are amazing. Velocipedo has a very short coat too, even in the coldest parts of winter. Everyone comments on it. Women seem to especially love Velocipedo because he is so exotic looking and so gentle. Does Velocipedo have bloodlines in common with your stallion? People tell me that is a pretty rare color. I wonder if the color genes have something to do with the short coat?

Thank you so much for your answer.

Best wishes,

Pat

Hi Pam,

There is a bit of a controversy on D.O.R. Velocipedo's color. He is registered as a buckskin but Juan Garayar who has worked with Velocipedo tells me he actually is a palomino with a black overlay on his coat. In the sun and in the moonlight, you can see the gold underneath very clearly. He looks like the black gold jewelry. Someone else called him a "velvet sable." I believe Juan is correct because Velocipedo sired our palomino mare, Hija de Sol Y Luna. Velocipedo was bred by Jolene Bell Hahn in California. I believe DOR stands for her ranch, Double Oaks Ranch. Jolene, I think, is President of the Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club. Velocipedo's sire is CONMOVEDOR R&BM and his dam is Arriba. Some of the horses in his bloodline are Mantequilla, Piloto, Caramelo and Sol de Oro (V). Velocipedo is a California horse. He was sold to people in AZ when he was seven and we got him from them a few years ago. I think Jolene told me she rides Velocipedo's brother in the mounted posse. Velocipedo is my baby boy. He is a stallion but he is the horse I can work with on the ground without a lead completely if I want. He does everything I ask and is my baby boy. Jolene told me Velocipedo means "Velocipede," the old fashioned three-wheeled bicycles that pull from the front and Velocipedo has an amazing gait. I think Jolene used to call him "Hotwheels" and we call him Mr. Hotwheels.
