You asked if you could walk her for 5 min. The answer would be yes if the swelling is down. If she has swelling I wouldn't walk her. I am sure your vet. gave you bute and asked you to cool it down with cold water. Did he ask you to wrap it?

I wouldn't like my horse cooped up that long. Even a horse that founders needs some exercise. I had something like that with one of my horses. When she came back from the vet, after three weeks at his place. She was stalled at the usual time. In the evening. After her breakfast in the morning she would go out to the indoor arena and just hang out on her time. She had more walking area, (only if she wanted to walk) and a nice, dry area and safe from the other horses. Lunch I would bring her in to eat. Some days she would want to stay in her stall, so I let her. Other days, she wanted to go to the arena. Another words, I let her tell me what she wanted to do. She knew how bad she was. You have to work with her mind too. They can get depressed just like us.

As time went on, she went out to a pasture close to the stable. I would make sure that she didn't have too much time outside. Perhaps a half hour a day.
Because she was getting to move around on her own, her little personalty started coming back and started looking forward to living.
I used to twist my ankle all the time. It would swell, and was VERY painful. I would still walk, just in a cautious manner. Remember, summer is coming and they too like the sun and need it. Of course, they also like the grass. So in the beginning try to keep her in a small space for grass eating or she WILL walk too much. That is what the Vet is concerned about.

What does your vet say? Something like that can take a year to heal. When your vet tells you that it is OK to start riding her. Start by walking her first. 15 min. and then work up to an hr. each day for a month. See how that works. Do it twice a day. Then start riding her the same way. 15 min. and then work up to an hr. and only at a walk on flat ground.
Sprains can take very long to heal.
Think like a sports person with an injury.
Once it seems like it is OK to ride her on a ride, ride her only at a
walk for awhile. You don't want to have her "Pound" the ground at first or you will be back to a sprain.
